My favourite quote from the article, Claude Monet on being given spectacles for his astigmatism: “If the world really looks like that I will paint no more.”
Reminds me of that famous picture of the surrealists, eyes defiantly closed against the ‘paucity of reality’.

    I love the Sun-style reductive rundown of artists at the end of the article!
    SIMON REYNOLDS
    Is now known to have suffered from an injured thumb; psychologists now believe that his overzealous theorizing may have been some sort of compensatory behaviour for this injury, however this would not explain his incapacity for hitchhiking.
    In ‘Deleuze & the theater of philosophy’ Dana Polan quotes a local newspaperman as attributing Francis Bacon’s entire oeuvre to the fact that ‘his eyes are differently focussed’, going on to praise him for managing to make something positive of his disability 😀

    Yeh; y’know Alan Bennett’s play ‘Kafka’s dick’ is about the theory – apparently seriously advanced – that Kafka’s work came from his anxiety about having a small penis.
    Hmmm, that would explain a lot in my case, come to think of it. 🙂
