Easy to forget the rough and ready way in which Kirby rendered characters whose image has been smoothed out and standardized over the years. Kirby was a PULP artist in every respect. Check the way his Thing looks as if it is only partly formed, as if it is composed of some amorphous pulpy matter.

    I like how you use pulp in two consecutive sentences, but with completely different meanings.

    Yeh, it’s what we call a pun — note the use of the term ‘in every respect’….

    although you could make a tortured zeugma of it instead: ‘his characters seemed to be wrought from, and as an artist he himself was, pure pulp.’

    re the child/toy interface – Dyou think Kirby’s style is sometimes a sort of magical reversion to childhood (the gigantism, perspectives from below, plasmatic forms)?
